Oscars blunder sees Moonlight awarded best picture after La La Land is named winner
Just to be clear – Moonlight won best picture. Not La La Land (Picture: AFP/Getty Images)

The biggest Oscars blunder in years saw the best picture award mistakenly given to La La Land – when in fact the real winner was Moonlight.

Sunday evening’s show saw Warren Beatty announce that Damien Chazelle’s musical had taken the top prize, moments after it won the awards for best director and best actress.

And it wasn’t until the makers of that film were midway through their acceptance speech before producer Jordan Horowitz interrupted and said that there had been a mistake – and that Moonlight had in fact won.

‘There’s been a mistake,’ he explained. ‘Moonlight, you guys won best picture.’ adding: ‘This is not a joke.’

He went on to show the card to the folks at home, confirming that Barry Jenkins’ film was in fact the real winner – much to the shock of the audience.
