In fairness to Mike Pence (or at least the staffer that was handling his account) on the whole the Israeli flag and Nicaraguan flag aren’t massively different – especially when seen at emoji size.
On a very basic level, both have two blue stripes and one white, with the Israeli flag noticeably bearing the Star of David.
But as vice president of the United States, it’s important to get these things right, which unfortunately wasn’t the case for the newly appointed Republican.
Not only did the mistake occur once, but twice, on two, now deleted, tweets.
They were sent out live by a staffer accompanying his speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual meeting on Friday.
The first tweet read: ‘WATCH LIVE my remarks to Republican Jewish Coalition. Under “POTUS Trump we will stand with Israel,’ accompanied by the Nicaraguan flag emoji.
The second said: ‘Our support for the Jewish people doesn’t end at our nation’s border. Under “POTUS, the world will know America stands with Israel,’ with the American flag emoji and again the Nicaraguan flag.
Speaking on Friday, Pence pledged to keep Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and to combat the ‘endless bias’ of the United Nations.
He said: ‘We’re going to keep our end of the bargain. If the world knows nothing else, the world will know this: America stands with Israel.’
