A man has been slapped with a fine after police caught him drunk driving a motorised cool box.
Lani Lewis Hunt, 35, from New Zealand, was stopped by oficers after he was spotted riding the four-wheeled fridge down Ngāmotu Rd in New Plymouth.
At around 8pm on December 9, Hunt was stopped by officers, who breathalysed him.
Hunt’s breath tested, conducted by an officer at the scene, revealed 538 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath – this amounts to more than double the legal limit of 250 mcg.
The summary of the facts stated: ‘In explanation the defendant admitted to drinking alcohol and stated that he had just gone to the dairy to get some smokes and had not realised it was illegal to drive the motorised chilly bin on the road.’
Hunt admitted drink-driving and driving without a licence during an appearance in New Plymouth District Court today.
He was convicted and fined $500, although he will not face a driving disqualification.
