If you’ve ever seen a film by The Sixth Sense director M.Night Shyamalan, you’ll know that he’s renowned for creating twists that can often leave audiences stunned and infuriated in equal measure.
But after the huge mix-up at the Oscars last night that saw La La Land accidentally receive the award for best picture, Shyamalan was only too aware that the twist was worthy of one of his creations.
Without missing a beat, the 46-year-old helmer wrote on Twitter: ‘I wrote the ending of the academy awards 2017. @JimmyKimmel we really got them.’
It’s an absolutely golden tweet – and one that has been duly recognised with over 50,000 retweets and 80,000 favourites.
Responding to Shyamalan, one fan wrote: ‘This is the best thing you’ve written since the very great Sixth Sense!’
Another said: ‘And the Oscar for Best Tweet, goes to @MNightShyamalan.’
The funny moment came in the immediate aftermath of the biggest mix-up in Oscars history – with La La Land winning the award before it eventually went to rightful victor Moonlight.
What is Moonlight about? Everything you need to know about the Best Picture Oscar winner
What’s the plot?
Moonlight is a coming-of-age film, charting the life of Chiron across three defining chapters of his life – starting out as a young black man growing up in turbulent Miami, it follows his ongoing struggles with his sexuality and unstable family life.
As we follow his life through his teenage years and into manhood – the film becomes a much broader inspection into identity as a whole.
Is it any good?
In our review, we described the film as ‘extremely moving’ which ‘speaks of the struggles of black men in marginalised communities, of the push and pull of nature versus nurture, and finding yourself – no matter how long it takes.’
Can I see a trailer?
Yes, yes you can.
Who’s in it?
Main character Chiron is played by three different actors over the course of the film: Alex R. Hibbert plays his younger self, Ashton Sanders plays his teenage years and Trevante Rhodes plays Chiron in his adult prime.
Playing his close friend Kevin is another batch of three actors, including Jharrel Jerome, Jaden Piner and Andre Holland.
The film also boasts an excellent supporting cast, including Mahershala Ali (Best Supporting Actor for his role as drug dealer Juan), Janelle Monae as Teresa and Naomie Harris as Paula.
Who’s behind the camera?
Barry Jenkins has directed the film and also written the screenplay.
Where can I catch it?
Moonlight is currently showing in UK cinemas now.
Incredibly, it wasn’t the only big mix-up of the night either after a producer found her face on the In Memoriam section – despite still being very much alive.
Oh dear. Here’s hoping that next year goes a bit more smoothly.
