Jose Mourinho insists he won’t beg Zlatan Ibrahimovic to stay at the club and joked Manchester United fans might have to camp outside the striker’s house to convince him to stay.
The Swede was United’s hero after his late header sealed a 3-2 EFL Cup final win against Southampton at Wembley.
It was the 35-year-old’s second of the game after an earlier free-kick and his winner was the striker’s 26th goal of the season.
Ibrahimovic signed a one-year deal at Old Trafford in July with the option of an extra year and Mourinho says he won’t ‘beg’ the striker to stay if he doesn’t want to.
‘I never beg for a player to sign a contract,’ said Mourinho.
‘I never beg a player to play for me.
‘One day Zlatan decided [at Inter Milan] to join Barcelona. I was very sad but I did nothing to try to stop him going because I don’t beg footballers.
‘But, if needed, I think maybe United fans could go to the door of his house and stay there all night.
‘If needed they will go for sure but we believe that he wants to stay with us for one more season.’
