Jose Mourinho has explained his decision to give Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard starting places for the EFL Cup final against Southampton.
Martial and Lingard were two of six changes that Mourinho made from the side that beat Saint Etienne in the Europa League last week.
When asked what prompted him to include the attacking pair, Mourinho said: ‘We don’t have [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan so we think we need somebody with these characteristics.
‘[Someone who can] drive the ball and has good dynamics in movement – so we made that decision.
‘We want to win the cup, to win the cup we need to score goals.’
Mourinho will become the first manager to win a trophy in his debut season at Old Trafford if United see of Southampton.
But the ex-Chelsea boss is not concerned about breaking the impressive record.
‘For the cub important [it’s important] but for me, not so much,’ he added. ‘I’m not thinking about myself but the club, the fans and the players.’
