Actor Bill Paxton has died following complications with heart surgery.
The 61-year-old is believed to have suffered from a fatal stroke, reports TMZ.
Hollywood stars who knew and worked with him have taken to social media to pay their respects to a man they called an ‘American national treasure’ and a ‘wonderful man’.
The actor, who starred in blockbusters like Alien, Titanic and The Terminator was a well-loved actor and admired by many.
The likes of Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Helen Hunt shared their memories of him on Twitter.
Tom Hanks, who worked with Bill on Apollo 13 and appears with him in The Circle later this year, said: ‘Bill Paxton was, simply, a wonderful man. A wonderful man.’
Arnold said he was a ‘great human being with a huge heart’ and posted a moving video on Twitter.
He recalled the time Bill was on set and said he was ‘so creative’ and ‘so passionate about movies and about movie-making.’
He added: ‘I think that he was one of the greatest actors, one of the most talented guys, and also a very, very good friend.’
Director James Cameron, who worked with Bill on Titanic, The Terminator, Aliens and True Lies released a statement to Vanity Fair following the actor’s death.
He paid tribute to ‘a good man, a great actor, and a creative dynamo’ saying he would ‘profoundly miss him’.
The statement reads: ‘I’ve been reeling from this for the past half hour, trying to wrap my mind and heart around it. Bill leaves such a void. He and I were close friends for 36 years, since we met on the set of a Roger Corman ultra-low budget movie.
‘It was a friendship of laughter, adventure, love of cinema, and mutual respect.’
He added: ‘I hope that amid the gaudy din of Oscar night, people will take a moment to remember this wonderful man, not just for all the hours of joy he brought to us with his vivid screen presence, but for the great human that he was.
‘The world is a lesser place for his passing, and I will profoundly miss him.’
Helen Hunt, who starred alongside him in Twister, said: ‘He made this movie great – he acted his heart out. What a talented man. My thoughts are with his family’
Actor Rob Lowe said he was ‘devastated’ by the news but encouraged fans to watch one of his films in his honour.
Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood said he was a ‘lovely, kind and warm human’.
Star Trek actor William Shatner wrote: ‘Condolences to the family of Bill Paxton. I just heard the news.’
Bill was currently staring in drama Training Days and his co-stars shared their messages of condolence.
Actress Julie Benz posted a picture of the pair and captioned it: ‘Rest In Peace my sweet friend.’
Another co-star, Drew Van Aker, wrote on Instagram: ‘Words cannot describe this man.
‘One of the most genuine people I have EVER come across.
‘I will forget what I have learned from him and how he affected everyone around him.
‘Gone way too soon my brother.’
