Bristol Palin has weighed in after openly gay Olympian Adam Rippon refused to speak with Mike Pence.
Olympic medalist Rippon declined an invitation to talk with Mike Pence, who campaigned on a platform that recommended gay ‘conversion’ therapy as a solution to AIDS in 2000.
Although, naturally, many people think it’s perfectly reasonable for Rippon to turn down an invitation to spend time with somebody who questions or threatens his very existence.
For some reason, Ms Palin used it as an opportunity to wade in and congratulate Pence for his ‘kindness’ in reaching out to Rippon.
Rather than acknowledging the politics or motivation behind a snub by Rippon or other athletes, Palin said that it was an attempt to appear cool.
She said: ‘The cool thing for athletes to do now, apparently, is to snub any invitations to the White House in order to take a stand against the Donald Trump administration.’
‘The most recent snub comes from an Olympic figure skater named Adam Rippon. Rippon is one of the first openly gay figure skaters to qualify for the Winter Olympics.’
In a blog post, she adds: ‘This is a great effort on behalf of the Vice President to reach out with kindness. In today’s crazy political climate, it’s nice to be kind — even if we have different political views.
‘I hope one day Adam and the Vice President have a chance to sit down together. In the meantime, I hope Adam — and all of Team USA — do a great job representing our nation well!’
Sadly, in 2018 having an openly gay athlete at the Olympics is still largely uncommon – and has been a little too much for bigots to deal with.
Rippon has simply said he does not want his ‘Olympic experience to be about Mike Pence’. He also had a RuPaul-inspired comeback for homophobes wishing him to fail.
He said: ‘To all those who tweet at me saying that they “hope I fail”, I have failed many times many times in my life.
‘But more importantly, I’ve learned from every setback, proudly own up to my mistakes, grown from disappointments, and now I’m a glamazon bitch ready for the runway.’
He later tweeted: ‘With everything going on in the media about me this Valentine’s Day I don’t want people to get distracted and forget how beautiful I am (on the outside).’
