A woman told her mum ‘I love you’ moments before crashing into a pool of water and drowning.
Xanthei Linares, 24, who had successfully battled cancer in the past, made a desperate phone call to her mother Patricia Linares after driving into the California Aqueduct near Hesperia, on Friday.
Her mother recounted the call in an interview with KTLA.
‘Mommy, mommy … the car. I went in the water … The aqueduct mommy,’ her daughter said while her car was filling with water.
Patricia added her daughter, who had also received a kidney transplant when she was younger, was ‘screaming desperately’.
The victim’s sister Annette Linares revealed her sister’s final words, she said: ‘The last words that she was able to say to my mom before she went under completely and was no longer able to speak were ‘I love you.”
Xanthei’s body was recovered at approximately 4am, around 130 metres from the bridge that stretches over the aqueduct.
She had lost control on Main Street and Escondido and crashed over a fence, The Sacramento Bee reported.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department later tweeted: ‘Update Hesperia – adult female recovered from vehicle and pronounced deceased Hesperia MAIT investigating the collision. No addtl info avail.’
A woman and her two children were also killed when a car they were traveling in crashed into the aqueduct earlier this year.
Xanthei’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for her funeral.
