Westworld actor Ed Harris has revealed he didn’t have the foggiest about the huge twist involving his own character.
Harris plays a sadistic villain known as the Man In Black throughout the show’s opening series, and has been confirmed to appear in series two of the sci-fi thriller TV series.
But the 66-year-old has quaintly suggested it would have been ‘a tad’ more useful for him to have known his character’s big secret — that the Man In Black is an older version of a young, virtuous man called William — before shooting began.
He told The Telegraph about the moment he found out on set: ‘It wasn’t shocking. It was like, “Oh, thanks for telling me”.’
However, he did admit that he could understand why producers might have held back the information, suggesting it ‘would have altered something’ in his performance.
Elsewhere, Ed described his character in the HBO drama as a ‘very violent and unforgiving individual’ (understatement of the century).
Playing him has apparently made Ed think about his responsibilities as an actor.
‘I’ve thought about it: what are you putting out there in the world, Ed? This violence and this behaviour,’ he said.
Currently Ed is starring in a play called Buried Child at Trafalgar Studios in the West End, alongside his actress wife Amy Madigan.
Westworld, meanwhile, is not expected to return until some time in 2018, with shooting on it beginning in ‘June or July’, according to Ed.
As yet we have no solid details of what kind of ‘world’ will be explored in the next installment, though many fans expect it to be Samurai World after an apparent clue was featured in the series one finale.
