A driver was in for a fright after a swan smashed through a car windscreen on a busy dual carriageway yesterday afternoon.

The young bird stopped traffic as it strolled along the A404 in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, before suddenly taking flight and ploughing into the BMW 4×4.

But sadly the swan died on impact from its injuries after becoming ’embedded’ in the windscreen, causing major disruption and delays at around 3.30pm.

A dramatic image taken by a passer-by shows the smashed glass with the bird’s wing sticking out of the driver’s side.

A woman could be seen quickly emerging from the black car.

John Bradley added: ‘Did my good deed for the year today. Stopped traffic on the A404 at Marlow to guide two swans on the carriageway to safety.

‘Just a shame for the one 200 yards down the road that had gone through someone’s windscreen….awful sight.’

Thames Valley Police confirmed they were called to reports of ‘four to five’ swans on the A404.
