Cristiano Ronaldo was showered with praise after his Ballon d’Or triumph on Thursday, but none came from so high as the message from Pele.

As expected, Ronaldo beat Lionel Messi to win the award for a fifth time – drawing him level with his great rival.

The Real Madrid forward was unveiled as the winner during an event at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It came at the end of a year in which he led Los Blancos to a La Liga and Champions League double.

Ronaldo’s team-mates and peers were quick to congratulate the 32-year-old – as was Brazilian great Pele.

‘Congratulations to Cristiano on winning this year’s Ballon d’Or,’ Pele wrote on Twitter. ‘I would love to have played on the same side as you!’

Ronaldo’s former team-mate Rio Ferdinand was quick off the mark as well.

Current team-mate Casemiro said Ronaldo was ‘simply the best’.

Messi, however, wasn’t among those offering congratulations. His last social media post was a cheap looking advert.
