Ant McPartlin has thanked his fans for supporting him as he revealed his struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.
Ant, 41, checked himself into rehab in June this year after admitting he had been struggling with alcohol and addictive drugs.
He kept his painful battle secret from his wife Lisa and his TV presenting partner Declan Donnelly, and apparently wept as he told them what he had been going through.
Now the star has spoken about what went on behind the scenes as he gets ready to leave rehab, and tweeted that he was blown away by the outpouring of love and support from fans.
From the official Twitter account he shares with Dec, he posted: ‘Have to say I’m overwhelmed by everyone’s love, support and well wishes today. Thank you one and all. I’m sending all my love back. Axxx’
In an inteview with The Sun On Sunday, Ant apologised for ‘letting people down’.
He said: ‘I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends through this really difficult time.’
He added: ‘I have spoken out because I think it is important that people ask for help if they are going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.’
Ant’s descent into addiction followed a knee operation in 2014 which required stronger and more addictive pain killers as the pain failed to go away, leaving Ant popping pills ‘willy nilly’, as he recalls.
Recalling an episode of Saturday Night Takeaway where he and Dec performed at the end of the show with Take That, Ant remembered: ‘The pain I was in was just ridiculous.
‘I knew there was a dance routine involved. I took a load of stuff that day just to get through the day. And I couldn’t feel anything on the night. But that did a lot of damage.’
It wasn’t until June this year, when he admitted to Lisa and Dec that he was in trouble, that he’d spoken to anyone about it. ‘I was embarrassed about it’, he added.
Ant is set to return to work alongside Dec on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in November.
