Authorities in Gibraltar say they have seized one of the largest and most advanced superyachts in the world over an unsettled bill dispute between its owner and its German builder. The Gibraltar Chronicle newspaper reports that shipbuilder Nobiskrug claims 15.3 million euro ($16.2 million) in overdue payments for the 143-meter (468-foot) long Sailing Yacht A. A £360million superyacht has been impounded after its Russian billionaire owner apparently failed to pay for it.

The German makers claimed Andrey Melnichenko owed £13m for the 100 metre high vessel.

The dispute led to the ship, called Sailing Yacht A, being taken by port authorities in Gibraltar only a week after it arrived in the British territory.

‘The vessel is under arrest and is currently at anchor in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters,’ officials told the BBC.

Melnichenko, 44, is worth £10.75 billion so money isn’t a problem.

The oligarch’s spokesman said his boss was confident everything would be sorted out and the state-of-the-art boat would leave Gibraltar soon.

Construction of the 143m long boat, which is one of the world’s biggest, was completed in Kiel, Germany, and it was tested in the Baltic Sea.

The Russian, who is married to 39-year-old model Aleksandra, has another luxury boat called Motor Yacht A.
