New pic of Alien: Covenant begs the question: 'Since when did hipsters fight aliens?'

The first image of the full space crew from Alien: Covenant has arrived, and we have some minor quibbles.

Michael Fassbender is getting musical in creepy new image for Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott’s direct prequel to his terrifying 1979 movie Alien is out in May, and stars Michael Fassbender as a meddling robot, James Franco as the ship captain and Katherine Waterston as a plucky female crew member.

But in this first picture, there’s something a bit weird about the look of these space travellers working aboard the Covenant.

Is it us or does it just look like a gathering of hipsters from Hackney?

No? Go on, hear us out…

We count three beards, a moustache and one cheap imitation Jesus (Franco).

Observe, also, the ironic Hawaiian ornament, casual vodka bottle and vegan-looking food.

And is that a pack of Rizlas we see there by the figurine?

We’re also a little disappointed there aren’t more fun sci-fi details with the drinking and eating utensils, though that may be because this story is set nearer to the present than Alien’s.

The new batch of disposable space victims also seem much younger than the Nostromo crew from Alien, who — we admit — may have seemed like hipsters to audiences in 1979.

Look at Harry Dean Stanton’s hat, for example. Boss.

Also the lighting in the Nostromo’s communal area was much brighter, almost like a hospital, and you could also see your food which must have been a bonus.

Thinking about it, hot young thing Ryan Gosling was cast in the upcoming sequel to Blade Runner, another Ridley Scott movie — and he’s king of hipsters.

Maybe sci-fi belongs to the trendies nowadays.

Ah, well. As long as they know how to use a flame thrower.
