Manchester United are ready to make David de Gea their highest paid player to fight off interest from Real Madrid, according to reports.

De Gea was on the verge of leaving Old Trafford to sign for Real in 2015 and has been repeatedly linked with a return to Spain over the past two years.

The 27-year-old, who has developed into one of the best shot-stoppers in the world since joining United in 2011, will be out of contract in the summer of 2019.

Jose Mourinho is determined to secure De Gea on a new contract and the club will open talks with the Spain international in the next few weeks, according to The Sun.

It is claimed the Red Devils plan to offer him terms of £300,000-a-week, which is what Paul Pogba currently earns. United hope he puts pen to paper on a new long-term contract before the World Cup finals in Russia next summer.

De Gea is enjoying another fine season at the Theatre of Dreams, ensuring the club have only fallen to three league defeats. United are currently second, 15 points behind Manchester City.

Mourinho’s side continue their Premier League campaign on Monday evening as relegation-battlers Stoke City make the trip to Old Trafford.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who returned from a serious knee injury earlier in the season, will not be able to feature for the home side, with Mourinho confirming he is ‘not happy with his condition’.

‘Zlatan is injured or is not totally happy with his condition,’ Mourinho said. ‘He fought like a tiger – like he likes to say – to be back, which he did.

‘He was starting having minutes here and there and had a start and had 60 minutes of one game, start another one and had 45 and he was not happy with his feelings.

‘He consulted other doctors, other opinions and we all make the decision to stop, (get) treatment and when (he’s) feeling really good come back to the work.

‘The date for him to be back to training with the team was around end of January, beginning of February, so let’s hope his feelings are better and we have him with us as soon as possible.’
