He may have had one of the most expensive substitutes benches of all time at his disposal, but Jose Mourinho was nevertheless hailed a ‘genius’ by Manchester United fans after making two changes that led to their winner against Blackburn Rovers.
United had been struggling in the FA Cup fifth round match on Sunday, going behind thanks to Danny Graham’s opening goal on 17 minutes.
Mourinho had made seven changes from the side that beat St Etienne in midweek and while Marcus Rashford levelled things up, United were finding it difficult to make a second breakthrough.
Turning to his bench on the hour mark, the Portuguese manager made a double substitution.
Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial came off in place of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

Thirteen minutes later, those two combined for United’s second goal of the game.
Pogba found space in midfield, looked up, and played a perfectly weighted forward pass to his 35-year-old teammate who slotted home for his 24th goal of the season.
There was only one word on the lips of United fans…
