Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been credited by former Arsenal striker Alan Smith for handling Marcus Rashford’s rise to the first-team well this season despite his slight dip in form.

The England international broke onto the scene under Louis van Gaal last season, scoring eight goals in his first 18 appearances in the Red Devils’ first-team.

Rashford has perhaps unsurprisingly failed to continue scoring at that kind of rate, but Smith is confident he’s working under the right manager in Mourinho.

‘After he exploded onto the scene he was never going to continue like that,’ Smith said.

‘You have to take a dip as a youngster. And I think Jose Mourinho’s just been very careful with him. He’s had opportunities but he’s not played as well as he would have wanted to.

‘There’s fierce competition for places up top. Wayne Rooney can’t even get in so it’s no disgrace for a lad of Rashford’s age.’
