M6 in Cumbria closed due to crane on fire

A 25-mile stretch of the M6 in Cumbria has partially reopened after a crane fire.

Cumbria Police said the motorway is now open southbound and between junctions 37 and 39 northbound.

It remains closed northbound at junction 36 but the backlog is being cleared via one lane. It is expected to remain closed for “several hours”.

The crane is on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway after the blaze broke out at about 07:40 BST.
