Barcelona needed a last minute winner to secure victory on Sunday night – with who else but Lionel Messi coming to the rescue.
Level 1-1 with Leganes – a team 17th in La Liga and battling relegation – Barca won a 90th minute penalty which the Argentinean converted.
But despite the last gasp nature of the goal, Messi failed to celebrate, simply turning and hugging team-mate Neymar. The apparent lack of joy from Messi immediately sparked concerns that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is unsettled and even that he could be angling for a move away from the Nou Camp.
Under-pressure manager Luis Enrique was questioned about Messi’s lack of celebration after the game.
‘I have not seen it and I am not the one who must answer,’ he said.
Barcelona are still reeling from being hammered 4-0 by Paris St Germain in the Champions League, a situation not helped by their own fans jeering them throughout the game with Leganes. Enrique, who was targeted by supporters, was unhappy with those in the stands.
‘I accept that they whistle at me, that the fans are hurt because of Paris, but not that they whistle at the players,’ Enrique told reporters.
‘I do not understand. As a fan, whistling a player from your own team does not make sense. Anyone can show their disagreement however they want.’
