Liverpool taxi driver held over 'drug-drive' crash

A taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after an elderly man was critically injured in a crash and later died.

Andrew Oakden, aged 89, was struck by a private hire taxi in Grange Lane in Gateacre, Liverpool, at about 23:25 GMT on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital but died on Sunday afternoon, Merseyside Police said.

A 42-year-old man was held on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs.

He was also accused of driving while over the prescribed limit for a specified drug and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Merseyside Police said he was released ahead of any decision to bring charges.

The force has appealed for witnesses to contact them.
