Jose Mourinho believes he did not influence Romelu Lukaku’s decision to join Manchester United and has indicated that Chelsea missed out on the deal because they wouldn’t meet Everton’s valuation.
The Belgium international surprisingly completed a £75 million move to Old Trafford in the summer as it was widely expected that the striker would return to Chelsea.
But Mourinho believes his former club lost out to United as they refused to pay the 24-year-old’s asking price.
‘I don’t think it was my influence, no,’ said Mourinho.
‘I think we paid the money that Everton asked for and we paid the player the wages that his agent asked for and we paid the agents the commission that they asked for.
‘I think that was the way. I don’t see another reason.
‘We paid what Everton asked for. The seller club is the club that decides the amount the buying club pays or doesn’t pay.
‘With Romelu my club decided to pay and they got him.’
