A list of Nirvana’s most played songs has been released on what would have been frontman Kurt Cobain’s 50th birthday.

Do mystery Foo Fighters airline tickets suggest Glastonbury 2017 headline slot? The American band’s 1991 album Nevermind gets a good showing on the list with Smells Like Teen Spirit unsurprisingly topping the list, with Come As You Are and Lithium coming in at second and third.

The iconic frontman, who was found dead on April 8 1994, was born on February 20, 1967 meaning he would have turned 50 today.

The list was compiled by music licensing group PPL using data from TV and radio broadcasters from 2000 to 2016.

According to NME, Tim Silver, of PPL, said: ‘Kurt Cobain was one of the most visionary figures in music in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

‘On what would have been his 50th birthday, we are delighted to be able to honour him with a chart of the 20 most-played Nirvana songs on radio and TV.

Part of the Seattle grunge scene, Nirvana formed in Washington in 1987, going through a number of drummers before Dave Grohl joined in 1990 and completed the final line up.

The band dissolved in 1994 after Cobain’s suicide but their music has continued to be played, streamed and sampled by other artists, including Jay Z who sampled Smells Like Teen Spirit on his collaboration with Justin Timberlake, Holy Grail.

Nevermind, which provided the top three most-played songs on the list, has sold over 30 million records worldwide with over 1.8 million sales in the UK.
