Emmerdale appear to have confirmed the nature of a new storyline for Liv Flaherty as the teenage character has opened up to Belle Dingle about the fact that she doesn’t have sexual or romantic feelings for males or females, giving potential to the rumours among fans that she is asexual.
Asexuality, described as a lack of sexual attraction to others and a lack of interest or desire for sexual activity, is something that has yet to be represented in a UK soap and viewers have been speculating for a while that this may be the direction that Liv’s story goes in.
Liv’s admission to Belle came after she shared a drunken kiss with Gerry, something that she had pushed herself to do when Gabby Thomas questioned why she never seemed to fancy any boys at school.
After apologising to Gerry and telling him that she would never have done it without the booze, Liv told Belle that she had no interest in boys, leading Belle to assume that she is gay. But Liv then clarified that she doesn’t fancy anyone, regardless of gender and it was clear that it was playing on her mind.
Belle played it down and said that her age meant it was normal for her to feel this way but it was evident that her lack of interest in romance or dating is bothering and confusing her.
It remains to be seen what lies for Liv beyond this and whether she will open up to anyone else and realise that she could be asexual but with show boss Iain MacLeod having promised a big storyline ahead for the character, we will be seeing more of her on our screens whatever happens.
