David Cassidy has left his fans very concerned after a disastrous performance in which he forgot lyrics and seemed physically unstable.
The American icon is now 66, and his age seemed to be showing during a rare gig at the Canyon Club in Agoura, California, on Sunday evening.
The former Partridge Family actor, who has had a very public struggle with alcohol addiction and filed for bankruptcy in 2015, did not seem himself — and at one point he reportedly tumbled off the edge of the stage.
Those watching didn’t know what to think as he lifted the microphone off the stand, only to pull it back and hit himself in the face with it.
The 1970s legend was also seen laughing to himself when unable to remember lyrics, and moaned about his ‘badly out of tune’ guitar, according to eyewitnesses.
As he walked on to the stage, he rambled about not ‘bullsh**ting’ in showbiz, and struggled to get a full sentence out coherently.
At one point he growled: ‘Obviously you’re not listening, so it doesn’t matter. I’ll just shut up now.’
As well as messing up his own hit Get Happy, he also forgot the words to the Beatles’ In My Life, which he performed in tribute to John Lennon.
Fan Jon Borack wrote on Facebook: ‘The term “train wreck” doesn’t begin to do this justice. Later in the show he fell down on stage.
‘While I hope he gets help for what is obviously a major substance abuse problem, I was also wondering if he was going to break into I Think I Love Booze or I Woke Up Face Down This Morning. Ugh. So sad.’
David is due to play the final gig on his tour in Santa Barbara next Sunday, but one thing he said last night suggests he might not get there.
‘I just can’t tour anymore. I know it’s time. I’ve done it at the highest level. I’ve been embraced by millions and millions and millions of people all over the world,’ he said.
David was arrested for driving under the influence in 2010, 2013 and 2014, the latter year also seeing him divorce third wife Sue Shifrin and go to rehab.
His bankruptcy was apparently linked to bad investments in the Bahamas.
