We can only imagine the anguish of La La Land director Damien Chazelle after the film was mistakenly announced as Best Picture winner.
The most catastrophic mix-up in Oscars history came as La La Land picked up the biggest prize of the night, before it was revealed only minutes later that Moonlight was the real winner.
But Damien Chazelle can at least take some comfort in knowing that he’s the youngest filmmaker to pick up the Best Director award – after the 32-year-old picked up the gong for his work behind the camera on the Hollywood musical.
As he accepted the award, Damien dedicated the honour to his girlfriend.
‘This was a movie about love, and I was lucky enough to fall in love while making it’, Chazelle said.
The honour came on the same night that Emma Stone picked up the best actress award for her role in La La Land.
But as she spoke after the ceremony, Emma praised Moonlight for its Best Picture victory.
She said: ‘I f*****g loved Moonlight. God, I love Moonlight so much! I’m so excited for Moonlight! And, of course, it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we would have loved to win Best Picture.
‘But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it is one of the best films of all time. So I was pretty beside myself.’
Gracious as ever, Emma.
