The 30-year-old transgender whistleblower will challenge for a seat in the state of Maryland, where she lives, according to a Federal Election Commission document.

It lists Manning, from North Bethesda in Maryland, as a Democrat candidate for the Senate.

The incumbent, Democrat Ben Cardin, was first elected in 2006 and is the senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Manning leaked a trove of more than 700,000 classified documents relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to Wikileaks.

The former army intelligence analyst, then known as Bradley Manning, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013.

However, then-president Barack Obama commuted Manning’s sentence and she was released in May 2017.

She has been hailed a hero by anti-war and anti-secrecy campaigners.

But her actions angered the establishment, and Donald Trump has described her as a traitor.
