Police hunting a suspect they believe stole money from a charity jar were shocked when they found him with a severely burned face.
Zachary Allen Shultz, 25, had accidentally torched a stolen van following his previous run in with the law in December when he was accused of stealing money from a Toys For Tots money jar.
The theft happened inside the Flame Broiler restaurant, in Jacksonville, Florida.
When police finally caught up with him this week they discovered he had got himself into some more trouble.
Shultz told them the burns to his face were the result of a botched attempt to fix a van.
The vehicle had apparently gone up in flames when he used a lighter to look at a problem with its steering wheel.
Shultz also said he hadn’t felt much pain since he burned his face a few weeks ago because he had been smoking crack.
He received treatment from doctors at the Shands Medical Center after he was arrested.
Shultz claimed he didn’t know the money in the jar was for charity when he took it.
