Arsenal look set to see off competition from Manchester United and Liverpool for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The German is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs in January.
The Gunners found themselves in a similar situation with former Schalke defender Sead Kolasinac last year and waited until towards the end of the season to strike a deal with the Bosnian.
And Arsene Wenger looks set to pull off a similar deal this time around with the Gunners closing in on an agreement with Goretzka, according to the Sun.
The 22-year-old is keen on leaving the Bundesliga for a fresh challenge and Arsenal are confident of signing a deal for the playmaker next month.
Goretzka can play in a number of different positions in midfield and is considered to be one of the brightest talents to emerge out of Germany in recent years.
Schalke confirmed earlier today that Goretzka had sustained an injury that would rule him out for a period, meaning a move in January is unlikely.
That has bolstered Arsenal’s chances of signing a pre-agreement, as Schalke would rather sell to a buying club this winter than let him leave on a free.
