The Apprentice’s 2016 winner Alana Spencer will be chatting to Metro.co.uk each week about this year’s series giving her take on those trying to avoid a showdown with Lord Sugar.
This week’s task: Putting on a fashion shoot and catwalk show.
‘This week’s task was a really good one. I think we’ve been left with a good bunch of people – although there were obviously things that went wrong which led to two people getting fired, they’re all good at this point so I quite enjoyed it. It felt like it was getting to the more serious business concept of the show than just laughing and joking.
‘I definitely felt for the two who went though. I think they were the right people to go for this task but I don’t really think anybody wants to go at this point because they’re all on a par with each other. What you’ve done in the whole process obviously goes towards it but if you’re up against really great people at this point it doesn’t matter how great you are, your chances of going are higher.
Jade and Harrison have both been really good throughout the process but I was glad Sarah didn’t go. She needs to be a little bit more vocal though – the interviews are her last chance to really show what she’s got and she needs to be confident and speak her mind.
‘I don’t think I would have put Joanna or Elizabeth in the top five at the beginning – the other three (Sarah, Michaela and James) I thought were good from the beginning. I think I said last week who I thought my final five were and I included Jade, but then again if the other team had lost then Jade and Harrison would have been there and I would have been correct with my predictions! I think Michaela’s great actually – it’s a shame she was a little bit too bolshy in this week’s episode because she’s been pretty solid so far.
‘I can’t see Elizabeth getting to the final though. She’s a strong bolshy character and I think she could potentially come unstuck during the interviews. I would be very surprised if we got to the final. She’s been the big character of the series and it’s good that she’s got this far a lot of the time you get these big characters and they go out in week seven because they are cast for TV, and she’s kind of proved that you can be a big entertaining character but still be good at what you do.
‘I also have to say that Joanna’s fashion is incredible. Whatever she does in the fashion industry after this whether it’s for Lord Sugar or elsewhere she’s going to do incredibly well because she is so incredibly stylish. It’s one of those tests isn’t it, it’s almost like this task was written for Joanna to show what she’s got, and if she hadn’t won it she would have gone – it was like me and the candy task last series, it was to prove that I know my industry and she proved that she knew her industry and made some really good decisions – going for the low-end products was a really good move for the people they were selling to. She was quite impressive this week I thought.
‘It’s a really tough one when it comes to who I think will make the final – I guess Sarah and I’m going to go with Michaela, she’s got an incredible business on the outside already and she’s been pretty strong throughout the whole process. I just hope she can sometimes get a bit flappy, I hope she can stay composed but those are the two I would go for.
‘I think James is in the mix also though – his modelling was my favourite thing of the episode. When he was doing the photoshoot I was thinking he was enjoying it and feeling quite comfortable but when he did the catwalk he looked out of his depth.
‘People were quite surprised when Courtney got to the final last year, but being in there, he was always one to watch for me – he inputted throughout all of the task, he wasn’t someone that tried to hog the limelight – although he was a bit like James in that he tried to hog the photoshoot on some occasions.
He was solid and strong throughout the whole thing but that’s hard to show on camera – unless you’re doing something incredibly fundamental in winning the task or something wrong causing you to lose the task you don’t get so much airtime. And I think James is a very similar character to Courtney, he’s just been doing the same.
‘Meanwhile with the interview task coming up, the most important thing to do is to show you know your industry – everyone who’s gone in there will have flaws in their business plan because they’ll have gone through it with a fine tooth comb and they will find things.
So I think the most important thing to do is show that you know what you’re talking about. And the other thing is to know your numbers but not be too over-zealous with your numbers. There were a lot of people in our year who claimed they were going to make millions and millions in year one and it’s just not realistic. They like to see realistic business plans.
